Hampta Pass Trek is considered the easiest and convenient of all treks in H.P. It might not be the most adrenalin rush giving or the most sought after trek, but definitely it is a trek that will leave you in awe of this beautiful place. The variation in the trails is enormous; scenic landscapes, open green pastures and meadows, glacial valleys, easy access and an exceptional, adventurous and hair raising crossing of the pass makes this trekking expedition to Hampta pass an exciting one.
Generally, it takes 4 days to complete the Hampta pass trek, but one more day is further added to the itinerary so as to visit the well-known and striking Chandrataal, a high altitude alpine lake few hours from Chatru. The best months to trek are May and June and August through October. The reason why Hampta pass is famous trekking zone is snow; the pass has lump sum snow which draws more tourists.
The nearest station is Manali. Therefore, the trip starts from Manali to Chika via Jobra. From Jobra the trek is undertaken by walk. This route comprises the first day. Balu ka Ghera is reached on the second day. You would cross amazing boulders, Gendrame and Rani Nallah on this day. The third day destination is Shea Goru from Balu ka Ghera via Hampta Pass. You will come across mind boggling and stupendous glaciers, cornice formation and snows all the way along. The maximum altitude will be reached on this day i.e. 14, 100 ft. Day four will start from Shea Goru and end up in Chatru. It is a steady descent on this day. You will witness the valleys of Lahual and Spiti and also the mountain ranges of Pir panjal and Spiti. Hampta Pass derives its name from the tiny hamlet Hampta, snuggled in the laps of the Kullu Valley.
According to one legend, Hampta Pass also got its name after a Rishi, Hampta Maharishi who meditated there.
According to the Hindu mythology Mahabharata, this trek route was travelled by the Pandavas on their quest for heaven. In fact, the route from Hampta Pass to Chandratal is often touted as the ‘staircase to heaven’.

Time Taken: 2 hrs drive to Jobra from Manali & trek from Jobra to Chika

On your first day of Hampta pass trek, you will drive from Manali to Chika via Jobra. Therefore, from Manali, the journey will start; it will take around 2 hrs to reach Jobra. You will be able to see the mountains of Himachal and know how beautiful trekking in Himachal can be for a trekker.
On your 1st day, there will be a trek of 2 to 3 hrs that would be easy and not so tiring as well.
As you will reach Jobra, you will start your trek from Jobra to Chika that will take 2 to 3 hrs; during the trek you will be able to notice a variety of trees like maple, deodar, toss, and oak.
Later, you will reach your campsite of 1st day that will be Chika and take rest.
Altitude: 10,100 Ft. to 11,900 Ft.
Time Taken: 8.5 Km, 6 hrs trek
Trek Gradient: Moderate trail, gradual ascent
Water sources: Enough water on the way
On your 2nd day of Hampta pass trek, you will trek to Balu ka Ghera from Chika campsite.
The trail will lead you in the way of the slope, boulders and rough terrains. Though the path will be easy and one can attain it.
You will be able to see the trees, witness the stunning view of the Dhauladhar range snow-clad peaks in front of you.
Later, reach a clear stream waterfall to the left at the distant, and can fill your water bottles there.
After you cross the waterfall, witness a river in your left where you can have a good time.
In the end, after few hours of trekking, you will reach the final destination for the 2nd day that will be Balu Ka Ghera.
Altitude: 11,900 Ft. to 14,100 Ft. to 12,900 Ft.
Time Taken: 7 Km, 10 hrs trek
Trek Gradient: First 1 hrs is gradual ascent then Steep ascent till the pass
Water sources: No water point on the way (Depends on the snow condition)
On your 3rd day of Hampta pass trek, head towards Siagoru via Hampta pass. In Start of your trek you will spot the snow chapped mountains that would be so wonderful. The whole trail this day will be along the riverside, initially, you will walk on the base of the River and then you will climb to Hampta pass.
Later on the trek, witness the white bed sheet of snow, and in summer, you can see the fresh snow; therefore, the best time for Hampta pass trek is between mid- June to mid-October.
Before reaching Hampta pass, you will have to cross two ridges. The trail to Hampta pass will be vertical and hard, so trek carefully.
Now, as you reach Hampta pass, you may get exhausted but the whole view will make you cherish every moment, and you will be mesmerized by the look of Hampta pass trek.
After exploring Hampta pass trek, there will be a descent to the next destination that will be Siagoru after lunch.
Altitude: 12,900 Ft. to 11,000 Ft.
Time Taken: 7 Km, 5 hrs trek
Trek Gradient: Gradual descent on the moraine
Water sources: 2 to 3 water sources of water on the way
On your 4th day of Hampta pass trek, trek from Siagoru to Chatru. Duration will be around 5 hrs. Chatru is a place without vegetation. Later, a tricky path will come to your way.
Be careful while walking as the path will be rough and tricky. The route can also be slippery.
Though, the whole trek will not be too challenging as you will get down from the mountains, you will be able to witness the Chandra River flowing below, and a road goes to it.
Note: only if the weather will allow, you will climb to Chandra River.
Chatru is a great camping site; it is a consensus of the three passes, Hampta, Rohtang and Spiti.
Altitude: 85 Km drive
Time Taken: 4-6 hrs
On your 5th day of the trek, head towards Manali from Chatru. As this will be the end of your Hampta pass trek journey.
Ride back to Manal, it will take 7 hrs to reach Manali in the evening.
As, the trek will come to an end so you will have an experience of trekking in Himachal. And remember amongst other treks in Himachal, Hampta pass is a beautiful trek.
